People frequently believe that only diabetic patients should monitor their glucose metabolism and take steps to keep their blood glucose levels at a healthy level. Some people assume that they aren’t necessary unless they have diabetes. CGMs, on the other hand, can benefit everyone by preventing glucose spikes. Also, maintain them healthy to avoid problems like diabetes in the future. Regardless of whether or not they have diabetes, research shows that everyone should have access to CGMs.

A continuous glucose monitor, or CGM, is a small medical device that continually checks your blood glucose levels in real time (with a 5-minute gap between readings).

To use a CGM, you place a small sensor on your abdomen (or arm) and penetrate the top layer of skin with a tiny plastic tube known as a cannula. The sensor is held in place by an adhesive patch, which allows it to take glucose readings in interstitial fluid (the fluid that surrounds cells in the body) all day and night. Sensors should be replaced every 7 to 14 days in most cases.

The method sends real-time readings wirelessly to a monitor device that displays your blood glucose levels thanks to a small, reusable transmitter connected to the sensor. Some systems include a separate monitor, and others now display information using a smartphone app, so you don’t have to carry about an extra device.

Apart from the continuous stream of data, most CGMs may send alerts when your blood sugar levels rise too high or fall too low. You can also adjust your alert parameters and how you’re notified.

To say that CGMs have changed diabetes care is an understatement. CGMs provide continuous, dynamic glucose information every 5 minutes, unlike standard fingerstick (blood glucose metres), which only provide a single glucose reading. In a day, that works out to about 288 readings.

    How Does CGM Work?

    • A small sensor is connected to your skin just beneath the surface, generally on your abdomen or arm. An adhesive will be used to keep it in place.
    • The sensor can detect the presence of glucose in the fluid beneath your skin. Throughout the day, it takes measurements every five minutes, and certain sensors need to be replaced after a few days.
    • The Continuous Glucose Monitor measurements will be sent to your mobile phones or trackers via a wireless transmitter. These transmitters will be largely attached to disposable sensors, but they will also be reusable and can be attached to a new sensor in some circumstances.
    • The information from the CGMs (glucose level readings) is reviewed by a professional coach who assesses your glucose metabolism. Then they provide you with advice and direction on the changes you need to make in your diet, behaviour, and lifestyle to keep your blood glucose at a healthy level.

Why should everyone access to CGM, Either they have Diabetes or not

CGMs, or continuous glucose monitors, can improve the lives of people with diabetes. However, for someone who does not have diabetes and appears to be in good condition, the technology can be life-changing. Similarly, why wait till you’re sick to get sick? By learning to read your oscillatory glucose levels with a CGM, you can live a healthier life.

Unfortunately, research has revealed that over 88 percent of the American population, or 300 million people, suffer from insulin resistance. Insulin resistance affects 15.5 to 46.5 percent of adults over the world, according to statistics. Diabetes, dementia, cancer, amputations, strokes, and blindness are just a few of the serious medical problems that can arise as a result of this disorder.

Such individuals may only improve themselves and take better care of their bodies if they understand insulin resistance and the impact of each food on blood glucose levels. Everyone would make better choices to keep their blood glucose steady if they understood how food and physical activity affect glucose levels. This would improve the status of insulin resistance.

A Continuous Glucose Monitor can assist athletes improve their performance by assessing their glucose metabolism. People with high glucose levels, for example, find it difficult to burn fat and carbohydrates. Thus, a CGM can be used to monitor blood sugar levels and plan a diet accordingly, as well as to plan and improve workout sessions and athletic performance.

    Benefit of Continuous Glucose Monitor

Helps to understand how Glucose Metabolism works

Many people aren’t aware that every food we eat adds to our blood glucose levels rising and falling. As a result, many people disregard diabetes as a disease they will never acquire or will only get in the future. CGMs, on the other hand, can assist you in gaining a better understanding of how your dietary habits, exercise levels, behavioural patterns, and lifestyle affect your health. It will also explain the danger of diabetes, how it develops, and how anyone can avoid developing the disease by paying attention to their glucose metabolism.

    Provides Personal care and Attention

The impact of a dietary item on one’s glucose metabolism varies depending on the individual. There are several elements that influence how food affects your blood glucose level. As a result, any diet plan that claims to cure diabetes or help you lose weight may not be beneficial to you. Continuous Glucose Monitors, on the other hand, are only for you.

It reduces the number of times you need to use fingerstick checks

Pricking your finger with a glucometer or finger stick check to check your blood glucose levels is an uncomfortable experience. However, using CGM, you can virtually always measure your blood glucose levels without much trouble. It works with a painless sensor and a wireless transmitter to provide instant results.

Immediately Alerts you if your Glucose levels go high and low

When your glucose level spikes or drops, CGMs come with transmitters that can send an alert to your phone or other tracking device. When your glucose level isn’t at the acceptable level, most of them provide you an alarm with specific instructions on how to get it back to normal. You can address a high or low blood sugar level before it becomes a serious problem.

    CGM is truly Informing

If you take manual blood sugar readings and are familiar with your body, you probably believe you have a good understanding of what your sugars are doing in between readings. You’re most likely mistaken. When I started noticing how my blood sugar varied throughout the day, not to mention at night, when I generally don’t test, I was taken aback. That’s why CGM is such a great tool for gathering data in between measurements.

You could suddenly observe how particular foods and activities affected your blood sugar levels over the next few hours. That data is priceless! Also, being able to detect low sugars before they occur has considerably reduced the number of lows I’ve experienced, not to mention the amount of money you have spent on them.

    Conclusion

Continuous Glucose Monitors can be expensive for some people, and learning how to use them can be difficult. These reasons mostly contribute to fewer individuals purchasing and testing the item. They also fail to recognise that these advancements are not limited to diabetes sufferers. However, everyone can benefit from bettering their health and avoiding the risks of metabolic disease. As a result, CGMs aren’t just for diabetics. On the contrary, it’s for everyone who wants to be a step ahead of the game when it comes to their health and fitness goals.
